The two of them had come all the way across the city on the bus, and during the ride the sky had darkened and the streetlights had bloomed all at once. Chipley strode purposefully on, as if she had no time to notice small discomforts. Chipley's other hand, bumped in a steady rhythm against her right leg. Sally's red SUitcase, its handle firmly gripped by Mrs. Chipley's black hat, which had started out so proudly erect, had gradually wilted, and now drooped sadly down the back of that lady's stout neck. Chipley's plump hand, was almost running to keep up with her. "As if we didn't have enough troubles!" groaned Mrs. ![]() It all began one rainy night at the end of a summer. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Grant Smith's debut novel reads as an entertaining chronicle of a Role-Playing-Game (RPG) scenario. The cover art by Matthew Stawicki is well done t he author's blog documents its creation. The promise of betrayals among the party members, an intriguing mystery with castle-ruins to explore, and interesting back stories per character are compelling most compelling is a wraith that haunts Rathen's dreams. ![]() The first 50% of the novel is the band forming, then it rockets into action that does not cease. The titular Rathen (a retired soldier/captain) leads a band of misfit characters, mostly retired, needing money or companionship, to explore/tame mysterious dangers around Ghrakus Castle. His obsession starts when she’s fourteen (he’s nineteen) and is told in alternate past/present chapters that sadly dragged on and on as the angst and mixed signals of the heroine’s story never took the relationship any further. It’s an arranged Mafia arrangement/engagement between families for peace but they only clash a few times over the many many years. This is not dark, nor is it any type of romance as, over the decades plus of their constant angsty and repetitive push n pull, the heroine dreams of the patient hero but acts like she hates him. This is one of my favorite authors and I never thought I’d be giving one of her books a one star rating.
